I am just a developer, why do I need to communicate well

Throughout the history of developers, the stereotype of a person who just codes and delivers the product was produced. Programming was started for women, when developing was not considered a valuable profession, once it started getting titled as a profession, men took over. This made a lot of changes, mostly women not being able to both code and to be happy. But why did this stereotype start?

The stereotype creation was not very well studied in this case, what matters is that human beings are supposed to evolve and we, as developers, need to understand that soft skills are as more important than the hard skills. Why then, soft skills are way more important than the hard skills? I will list all the arguments which I have for the soft skills:

  • The product needs accuracy
  • The client needs to feel understood
  • The client needs to feel considered in every decision
  • Your coworkers need to feel comfortable with you, since you are a team
  • You need to know how to give proper constructive feedbacks in order for you to get better and the other people too
  • You need to know how to receive feedback: this is as much important as giving, because you cannot be defensive all the time, otherwise you are never improving
  • In order to be a leader someday, you'll also need to understand everyone's needs and than englobes a lot of communication skills

Communicating is everything, not only talking but listening too since it's a two way road. It's about sharing knowledge and experience, but also listening to other people's experiences, learning through them, through your coworker or client, even stakeholders.

Having empathy also is a really important characteristic, after all you need that to truly understand other people's perspectives.

This article is short because I wanted to make something more objective, just to make people finally understand how soft skills are way more important, because the hard skills you can develop by taking courses or studying, soft skills are passed through experience.

Please, share to your friends!
